The Response
I realize the university says that they thought the first shooting on campus was a "domestic incident". I can't help but wonder, though, how many lives would have been saved had they locked the campus down immediately after the first attacks. I also wonder why this issue isn't being addressed in the media. I remember reading about how some of the parents were questioning the university's response the day it happened, but I haven't heard anything since. There were TWO HOURS between shootings. Two people were killed in the first incident, and THIRTY in the second. If the campus had been locked down following the first incident, maybe the second could have been avoided.
I'm not saying that the university was definitely in the wrong; I'm just voicing my thoughts, wondering aloud. Perhaps Virginia Tech's administrators truly did all they could. I know it's easy to point fingers after the fact; I just feel that everyone should learn from this by examining what could have been done differently in order to prevent a tragedy of such huge proportions.
