Thermometers

I used to like inexpensive digital thermometers, but for some reason, the two I own don't work very well. I've owned one for years and it always worked great, but the other I received in a gift package when I was pregnant with Em has never worked well. I think the former just has an old battery and the latter is downright broken, but two bad digital thermometers is enough for me to be irrational and prejudiced against ALL digital thermometers. ;-)

Whatever happened to the good old-fashioned mercury ones of yesteryear? I know, I know, doctors advise against them because of the... uh... mercury. I remember them being good, accurate and inexpensive, but it's hard to even find them in stores nowadays! (Forgive me for speaking like I'm 60 years old. :-)

Emily had her second (and last) flu shot on Wednesday, and afterward we went to Costco (Mommy's favorite store -- I swear I could spend all day in there!) and I bought the
Braun ThermoScan IRT 4520 Ear
Thermometer
(ooh, fancy schmancy) that I had been eyeing for months. Stephen had always told me that ear thermometers are inaccurate pieces of crap, but for some reason I had always been drawn to this one, wondering if it's any good. When I got home and showed it to him, he went straight online and looked up its reviews. Good thing we decided to try it out for ourselves, because if we had simply listened to the folks online, we most likely would've returned it quite promptly. We did try it out, though. Stephen tested it on all of us, and decided that it was actually a good little thermometer. Actually, he said he was impressed! He was most concerned about consistency, and consistent it is. Fast, too! It delivers a reading in 60 (more like 10) seconds or less. And it was only $30, which I think is a great price for a quick, accurate, consistent reading on an uncomfortable, sick, fussy child.

Too bad we didn't have it when Daniel was here. Luke ended up with a decently high fever and Dan didn't like our thermometers. (I don't blame him; neither did I!)

Hard to believe all that I just wrote was about thermometers, but it's been an issue that's been bugging me for a while now. I'm glad to have my new
Braun ThermoScan! :-)

I can totally picture Stephen testing out the thermometer. Such a Lawless-guy thing to do.

We actually had Dominic (we call him the munchy-man) take a bite out of a mercury thermometer. Scary.

You're right, it is such a Lawless-guy thing to do! Too funny. :-)

Wow, pretty scary about Dominic! You must've been freaking out!! Did you have to get him checked out or did you see that he didn't get to the mercury? I can see why you call him Munchy-Man!

Yikes!!

We didn't have to bring him in, but we did some quick research on the computer and it didn't appear to be a big problem. He's given us quite a few scares, including climbing up to a high shelf in our closet, opening a "child-proof" container of fluoride tablets and consuming some of them. Again, a scare, but not enough to be a problem. A call to the poison control center (our 2nd within a month) gave us an all clear within a few minutes - especially after he threw most of it up. We're pretty careful about safety around here (and getting more-so all the time!), but it can be a lot trickier with older siblings.
