How Convenient...

I'm getting sick and tired of various businesses overcharging me for things. Target has done this on numerous occasions. I remember one time I bought a $20 Lego gift set for my nephew, and the checker charged me for two. I didn't notice it 'til later because I had bought a LOT of stuff that day, so an overcharge of $20 didn't get my attention until I got home. This has happened many times! And of course with two small kids wriggling around, it can be extremely difficult to keep track of what the checker's doing until I get to the car or get home and review the receipt against my purchases.

The last incident was at my local grocery store. The ground beef was on a buy-one-get-one-free sale, so I put two packages down on the checkout counter. I was charged for one ($8.99) and got the second free, but then the checker charged me for a third! I even noticed that the total seemed too high before I gave her my money, but she assured me she gave me the one for free. What she didn't "notice" was that she charged me for ANOTHER one! Thankfully I looked over my receipt when I got to the car, and I was kidless, so I went back in. (It was pouring, too.) It took a good 10 minutes at least for the manager to come, look over my receipt and try to convince me that I was wrong (but once I pointed out the third charge, she couldn't argue anymore), fill out a form, and give me my money back. Meanwhile Stephen was eager for me to get home because Leah was acting up. Argh!

I found this article on stores overcharging their customers. Interesting that if they do it too much, they get fined. I like that. Sometimes the customers are undercharged, but they're 3.5 times likelier to be overcharged, of course. And what's worse is that far too much of the time, the businesses get away with it! The customers are often too lazy to check and usually just don't notice. Also, if they DO notice, they're often too lazy to contest the charge, which isn't good.

I dunno. The stores MUST do it on purpose. It just happens far too often. Does it happen to you? Regardless... check those receipts!!

Sometimes we get even. At a warehouse chain that shall remain nameless (not the one founded in San Diego)), we bought a case of beef, which came packaged in two separate boxes, each with a price tag on it. When we got to the car, Glen said, "We've been overcharged here before, so I'm not going back in to tell them they didn't charge us for the second box of beef." What goes around comes around. Kay

Yeah, you're right. I, too, kept something I wasn't supposed to (from Target) because they had already taken enough of my money without permission! I felt guilty, though. What happened was, I got to my car and saw a meat thermometer in my cart, and it was hidden away and went unnoticed. I paid for everything else, of course, but the thermometer I got for free.

It just happens the other way around much too frequently!
